Welcome to Matai Team's Blog. We are a vibrant bunch of Year 5 & 6 children from Clutha Valley Primary School. CVPS is located in South Otago, New Zealand. We love the outdoors. You can often find us running around outside playing games at any time of the year. Check out our blog to find out what we have been learning in our journey of growth...

Tuesday 29th August 2011

Today we have started a new unit in maths on Fractions, Decimals and Percentages. You can go to our maths page and access links to your learning. Also Matai started speech writing today and what a clever bunch of kids we have. Go to our writing page to read some interesting introductions to why homework should be illegal. This afternoon we also started our inquiry unit on 'Kitchen Chemistry'. We did rocket writing to brainstorm as many ideas we could think about around chemistry in the kitchen. Everyone is really excited about the experiments that we will be able to do around this topic.

Friday 26th August 2011

Today has truly been a fun Friday! Matai team has been hard at work this morning using craft knives to make templates for screen printing. We have been learning how to draw cartoons this term and we have designed simple pictures to screen print onto t-shirts. The process we are discovering is quite tricky to use the craft knife safely and effectively to cut out our designs. Here are some pictures to show you how we are doing...
Anna, Jeremy and Jaclyn cutting their designs out.

Look at the concentration: Great work Jack, Danielle, Helga and Abbey!

Larissa with her cartoon cut-out. All ready to screen print!

After this we had an Enviro Schools workshop with Laura from the Clutha District Council. She talked to us about ways we can make our school and the things we do more sustainable for our earth. We did some really cool activities. Here are some pictures from our session...

Brainstorming what an Enviroschool is...
We are discovering here how big our earth really by comparing it to an apple.

The afternoon of our day ended with buddy reading with Kowhai class. We loved hearing their stories and sharing some with them.

See our post on Fun Friday to see how our day finally ended - what a well deserved weekend after an action-packed day!

Wednesday 24th August 2011

Today was the end of our unit on Time and Temperature for Mathematics, so first thing this morning we were doing a post test to see all the new things we have learnt. We now know how to tell the time using analogue and digital time. As well as converting these to 24 hour clock time. Some people can even work out different time zones and read and interpret timetables. We have also learnt how to use a thermometer as well as taking estimates of temperature.

Matai are also hard at work producing our own stories in writing. Some people have decided to use their ICT skills to publish their stories. Everyone is really enjoying creating their stories. Mrs Suangoon has been having conferences with us to help improve our stories by making us think about ways to change our writing so it has maximum impact for our readers. Watch out in the next couple of weeks for our finished products!

Meet the team!

Come check out all these fabulous people that are in Matai Team!

Tuesday 23rd August 2011

We started our day with a performance from the Kahurangi group. They came all the way from the North Island to perform waiata, poi, dance and show us how to use a taiaha. Tyran was selected from our class to become a warrior and have a go at using the taiaha. We all thought this was really funny as he had to make loud noises and pull scary faces. Everyone in the school really enjoyed the performance and we learnt that Maori people come from Hawiki and that they use their language to keep their culture alive.

In the afternoon we started making menus for healthy eating. This is to show what we have learnt about eating a balanced diet. We know that we have to eat 5+ a day of fruit and vegetables, eat at least 5 carbohydrates a day. Carbohydrates are food such as bread, cereal, rice, potatoes and pasta. We also have to make sure we get our protein by eating meat and keep drinking milk or eating dairy products at least twice a day to keep our bones nice and strong. Everyone has created some awesome restaurant and cafe menus to show this: we will display these on our blog when we have our finished products.

We are also keeping ourselves really fit at the moment by continuing our training for cross country. Some people have been selected to represent CVPS for the South Otago Cross Country event in Clinton on Monday. Well done to Ella, Kirsty, Helga, Tonia, Anna and Scott for having fast enough times to make it through to this event. We will keep you posted on how well they do next week.
